Client: Civil Engineering Group (London)
Location: Hammersmith Bridge, London
Scope: Securing raised curbs to protect pedestrians
Products Supplied: Resin anchors, custom-made fastenings
Background
Hammersmith Bridge is an iconic London landmark with a history stretching back to 1887. Currently closed to most vehicular traffic due to structural concerns, the bridge still carries large numbers of pedestrians and cyclists each day. To improve safety for those crossing, a Civil Engineering group was tasked with installing raised curbs along designated pedestrian walkways.
These curbs act as a physical barrier between pedestrians and passing cycles, providing extra reassurance—especially for parents with young children and less confident walkers.
The Challenge
Working on a Grade II* listed structure meant the engineering team faced multiple constraints:
- Minimal structural impact: Any fixings had to be non-invasive to protect the bridge’s historic materials.
- Durability: The fastenings had to withstand constant vibration, temperature fluctuations, and the corrosive effects of the river environment.
- Custom requirements: Due to the bridge’s age, standard components would not fit the unusual surface profiles.
Our Solution
CBL Fastenings collaborated closely with the Civil Engineering group from the design stage through to installation. We supplied:
- High-performance resin anchors capable of bonding securely into existing bridge materials without causing damage.
- Custom-made stainless steel fastenings engineered to fit the non-standard mounting points along the walkway.
Our in-house manufacturing capability allowed us to quickly produce prototypes, test them on-site, and adjust tolerances to ensure perfect fit and long-term performance.
The Result
The raised curbs were successfully installed to schedule, creating a clearly defined, safe pedestrian space along the bridge. The resin anchors and custom fastenings provide a secure, low-maintenance fixing solution designed to withstand London’s weather and the bridge’s constant foot and cycle traffic.
The Civil Engineering team praised the ease of installation and the peace of mind provided by components that were purpose-built for the job.
Key Takeaways
- Collaborative approach: Working closely with the contractor ensured that every fastening was fit for purpose.
- Custom fabrication: Our ability to design and produce bespoke parts in-house allowed the project to move forward without delays.
- Long-term durability: Using stainless steel and high-grade resin anchors ensures that safety measures remain reliable for years to come.
CBL Fastenings is proud to have contributed to this important safety improvement on one of London’s most recognisable landmarks, combining heritage sensitivity with modern engineering solutions.
